Controversial “.xxx” Domain Approved
Later this year, the face of the internet will change forever. The controversial domain “.xxx” will be available for registrants to use.
The domain “.xxx” is not a regular generic domain like “.com” and “.org”, but it is technically considered a top-level sponsored domain which means it requires a sponsorship by s specific industry or community. “.xxx” is sponsored by the International Foundation for Online Responsibility.
You would think that right-wing political parties and religious groups, aka the “usual suspects” would be the only ones who highly oppose this idea for a specific porn domain. Surprisingly to a lot of people, the pornographic industry are also extremely upset with this decision. Apparently the adult video industry fears this new controversial domain may lead to the facilitation of censorship by search engines and unnecessary and unwanted attention about the domain may call forth an unwanted legislative response from the U.S. Congress and other governments.
Although approved, it is still very unclear who exactly does want this domain, and who will definitely use it. Apparently The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers’ (ICANN) Governmental Advisory Committee believes the application of approval for this domain applies with all necessary policies. They believe it is a good idea and it is a positive way of “taking appropriate action to restrict access to illegal and offensive content” and to “ensure the protection of intellectual property and trademark rights, personal names, country names …”.
I guess the big question is how much will a specific porn industry related domain change the way free sex videos etc. are accessed and viewed on the internet? Only time will tell.
